Lazy Sunday Bike Ride: baby Canadian geese and weird bikes

Hi all,

I’ve got some random photos to share with you today: baby Canadian geese along the river, and a bunch of weird bikes on display at some sort of bike fest held at the MEC in Westboro.

First, the bikes.

The above photo is a replica of an old fashioned bike for men which first appeared in the 1870s.

Next is the woman’s bike, which appeared in the 1890s. Women’s bikes were built differently in order to accommodate those huge dresses they wore at the time.

Interesting fact about women’s bikes: they played a role in the women’s movement. As tempted as I am to go off on a tangent, I won’t. I’ll just say that men at the time were quite intimidated by lady cyclists. This website is an interesting read for anyone wanting more details.

Okay, onto the blender bike! I’m not sure what inspired this idea but I love it. Someone created a pedal-powered blender. I got to sit on it and blend a smoothie. Woo!

I do have a video of it but I’m not quite ready to put a video of myself on my own blog. HOWEVER, I did make a youtube video of the baby geese.

Aren’t they cute? I think so. In case that video wasn’t enough check out all the pictures I got. Not many are close-ups as I had to keep my distance. The parents hiss at anyone who gets too close.

Now I feel better about not taking any photos last year. Next on my list: the Experimental Farm. I’ll bring my Canon Rebel to take close-up shots of flowers. Hopefully sometime in June I can do that.

Thanks for stopping by!
