The Stranger

I’m the one who opens the gate for them. The child is wild-eyed and burning with fever.

“Help us!” they shout.

“I will,” I promise.

Peeling off bloodied bandages, I find the bite marks.

My hand grips my knife.

“It’ll be okay.”
